Andrew’s Story - From Success to Starting Over
A Thriving Businessman
Andrew had built a successful business, turning over more than £1 million for 17 consecutive years and employing over 200 people. He owned multiple business premises, a country estate, a caravan in Southend, and a five-bedroom villa in Portugal. Life was good, and Andrew couldn’t have predicted the challenges ahead.
A Series of Devastating Blows
After losing a major business contract, Andrew’s life began to unravel. His mother suffered a stroke, leaving her paralysed. His best friend and colleague took his own life. His own health deteriorated, with diabetes, high cholesterol, and liver and heart problems. Then, his wife was diagnosed with cancer.
“I think that was the final straw,” Andrew recalls. “I had always been able to control everything with money, but I couldn’t help my wife.”
Turning to Alcohol and Drugs
Feeling helpless and overwhelmed with guilt, Andrew began using alcohol and drugs to cope. “You know when people say they just closed the door and walked out? Well, that’s exactly what I did.” He left his life behind and retreated to his caravan in Southend, never returning to work.
Hitting Rock Bottom
The bills and debts piled up, and Andrew eventually declared bankruptcy. After years of sofa surfing with friends, their goodwill ran out, and Andrew finally came to HARP.
“I was so scared to come to HARP. I wasn’t sure what to expect,” he says. “I thought people would be judgmental, but everyone at HARP was so selfless and nice.”
Finding Help at HARP
At first, Andrew was housed in Heath House, HARP’s emergency accommodation. He later moved into supported accommodation, where he began to rebuild his life. Andrew discovered a passion for gardening and started growing herbs and spices for his kitchen. He also began receiving treatment for depression and worked closely with his key worker, Duncan, to mend relationships affected by his past choices.
“I’ve now realised how important it is to get help for depression and mental illness. I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time. It feels like I can start again.”
Looking to the Future
Grateful for the support he’s received, Andrew is determined to rebuild his life. “I am just completely grateful for how helpful and supportive everyone at HARP has been.”
As he looks ahead, Andrew has a message for others:
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from—HARP is non-judgmental and will help you.”
